Biggest Road Race in East Kent, The SsangYong Canterbury 10 Mile Road Race is Launched for 2019

The Canterbury 10 Mile Road Race which is the largest in East Kent with in excess of 1,500 entrants, will take place on January 27st 2019. Last year’s headline sponsor, Korean car brand SsangYong have agreed to continue their support for the race. The course, which is mainly run along undulating country lanes to the south of the city, will remain the same as in previous years. The race HQ will also continue to be based at Canterbury Christ Church University Sports Centre (Pilgrims Way, Canterbury CT1 1PH).

Locally based Invicta East Kent runner Abel Tsegay will hopefully be going for his 5th straight victory and will aim to improve on his personal best around the course of 51m 13sec. Last year he won from Medway and Maidstone’s Tewelde Menges and Canterbury Harriers Peter Hogben. It is also hoped that the ladies winner, Nicole Taylor from Tonbridge AC who completed the course in 58m 34s will return to defend her crown.

The race, which is organised by Invicta East Kent Athletic Club, and was a sell out in 2018 will be aiming to sell out once again so early entry is encouraged. Runners of all abilities are welcome to challenge themselves over the 10 mile distance, which is an ideal early test for those taking part in a spring marathon.

There will also be a significant cash prize fund for the first 3 male and female runners and for the first man V40, V50, V60 and V70 and lady V35, V45, V55 and V65. There are also prizes for the winning male and female teams.

All runners will receive a quality medal and free photographic downloads. There will also be free massage at the finish offered by Kesson Physiotherapy.

The agreement to support local charity the Pilgrims Hospices has been expanded with the race now becoming one of their officially supported events. This promotes sponsored runners being recruited in addition to a cash donation to the charity by the race organisers.

Race Director Glenn Mousley has said “the 2018 race was the best ever with a great atmosphere in the race. It is set to be a popular again in 2019, so potential entrants should register in good time to ensure a place”.
