Ben and Jacob Burton key to Multi-Event success

In their final competition before heading off to University, Ben and Jacob Burton were at the English Schools Combined National Finals at Bedford. This took place on the 15th & 16th September, where Jacob and Ben were also representing Kent schools in the Decathlon.

The first day was a very warm day, with Ben performing very solidly all day. He was sitting 5th, his brother Jacob sitting 17th at the end of day one. The second day was a bit on the blowy side, which was going to make it hard for the pole vault which was the 3rd event of the day. Ben managed 3.50m vault bringing him into 3rd place. Jacob only managed a 2.70m vault. Javelin was next, and Ben managed 37.68m, keeping him in 3rd place. This left only the 1500m to finish off the weekend. He was really nervous, and knew he had to perform the right race and finish with less than 15 seconds between him and a Somerset lad to finish in 3rd place overall – the bronze medal. The race was over and the Somerset athlete had indeed come in ahead of him.

The waiting game now started. Had Ben done enough? Finally the result was out.....yes, he had done it, with about 5 seconds between them. Jacob didn’t quite have as good a day as Ben but was happy as he has been unable to train for several weeks and crucially, and not to be underestimated, without him they would not have had a team. Ben was buzzing, and was chuffed to finally get a bronze that he has worked so hard to achieve.
