SCVAC-Kent League-DIV 2- Canterbury Academy -14/5/12

It`s not often I have the opportunity to begin a match report with this headline!! So it is particularly satisfying on this occasion. We took advantage of being at our home track-we fielded a strong team-we competed well-we won. Now, if we could only regularly get a squad of equivalent strength at away matches!!  Promotion would be well within our reach.

In the M35 Mark Dawson placed 2nd in the “A” 200m (28.0), 3rd in the HJ (1-20) and contributed the final leg in the 4x100m which carried the team to 2nd place (55.2). In the same age group Terry Hawkins won the “B” 200m (27.3) and the shot (8-88) before also running strongly in the relay. Richard Hudson had an equally busy evening in the M50 events placing 3rd in the 200m (32.2), 4th in the shot (5-33) and leading off in the relay. Steve Burt was the 4th member of our squad. Rob Whittaker enjoyed the rare luxury of running the 1500m in his own M50 age group. He is so good he usually contributes to the teams efforts in the M35 category. His class was evident in his winning the race by 25 sec (5-01.4)!!

Perhaps the most satisfying and impressive victory by an Invicta athlete was that of Nick Farnell in the M35 Jav. We have seen Nick coaching his son Max, and other youngsters, over some years now and it has been very evident that he still retains the strength and technique that made him a top class thrower when he was a bit younger than he is now!! But Nick hasn`t actually competed for 20 years or so. So what does he manage on his comeback (and only a few weeks before his 50th birthday when he will move into a new age category with a lighter Jav)??  He wins by over 11m (39-52)!! Equally importantly, Nick says that he really enjoyed competing again. Can he get over 40m before his 50th? We`ll let you know.

And to complete the results John Gilbert won the M60 shot (8-76) and finished 3rd in the M50 Jav (23-83) and equal 2nd in the HJ (0-92). Since this match the men finished in joint 2nd at the 3rd match of the season at Dartford on Fri 25th May (report to follow). Unfortunately there are no women’s` reports for either of these matches as none of our women competed.

Yours in Sport,

John Gilbert
