Millard and Sawyer prove mettle at Southerns

Alex Millard and Maddie Sawyer represented Invicta East Kent Athletics Club at the SEAA Champs which took place at Lee Valley between the 12th and 13th August.

Saturday kicked off on a bright and fresh morning, perfect running conditions for the 3 heats of 19 runners. Maddie opened her account by running sensibly and ensuring that she came second in heat number three with a very comfortable and safe 2.21.15 ensuring her a place in the final on Sunday.

Sunday dawned dull, breezy and with a strong hint of rain in the air. First race was the 800m final, this time with eight runners briskly setting off from the gun and after some jostling, settled into what would turn out to be a competitively tactical race. Maddie effortlessly broke out of an attempted boxing-in at the break point by four of the main runners, pushed to the lead element and then camped on the shoulder of runner number two and then onto the lead runner for the duration of the third quarter of the race. Storming past with 200m to go Maddie took gold with a time of 2.16.07, lifting the title as Southern U15 Girls 800m Champion.

Two races later Alex lined up with nine other runners for the straight final of the U17G 1500m. Alex again proved her worth as a high quality and effective middle distance athlete, leading from the pistol with a controlled and brutal pace making it extremely difficult for the chasers to keep in contact with her. It took one runner three laps to slip past Alex’s guard and with less than a hundred meters to the line, putting Alex in silver medal position with a highly creditable 4:46.68.

Well-done and full credits go to both athletes for their outstanding efforts in representing the Club.
